Was he a new recruit? If so, you must have had some training in stock. He'll normally train once you've sold them out. This has been in place for some time, as is often the case to prevent abuse by some.

I've just had the same thing this morning. I had a few training sessions in stock because of a player who was injured. Now that I'm doing them again, I've got a player with 3 months' seniority, not injured at all, who arrived late for training this morning...
