When I tried to release a player who was retiring this season, I received a blocking message telling me that I couldn't release him.

I can understand that for auctions or transfers, but by releasing him I don't want to get any money back, I just want to make a place for myself in the squad :D

Has this rule been in place for a long time? And is it necessary?

If you really can't, you can turn it into a staff job and find a place for yourself
