Am I missing something about the match engine?

After that, how can I put it... forget the competition... if you want to develop, join an agreement, they'll be able to guide you ;)

There's no "merit" in finishing chances, it's purely random.
Only xGs are an indicator that you've been 'better' than the opposition.
But there's nothing more you can do to improve your finishing.
You can play a 20/20 match and get knocked out, while in another match an over-dominated afk can go through without having followed a single second of the match.
