Is there any point to this info, or is it just to act all ‘IRL’?

If we’re doing this in real life, we could add the contract lengths of players who aren’t in our squad – it might be fun to know ;)

And why not add an automatic purchase feature (without needing approval) if the player doesn’t have a new contract within a certain timeframe? ;)

It’s not just for show. It’s to do with the shop – you can now have shirts printed with the number of followers your player has; the more followers your player has, the more shirts he sells.
