It all depends on your opponent and their tactics; you have to adapt to each opponent.

If you want to play a very attacking game, you could try fielding five forwards! Two forwards, one on each wing and one centre-forward.

In my opinion, a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2 with a defensive midfielder offers the best balance between defence, possession and attack, but it really depends on the style you want to develop, the gap in ability between you and your opponent, and their strategy. You can also tailor your tactics to different playing styles (and therefore the right players) to try and address any weaknesses in your approach.

If there’s a ‘meta’, I’d be curious to know what it is too.

Never forget that this is a game of probability and statistics.

To succeed in this game (and, above all, to avoid getting frustrated by defeats), you’d be better off knowing the Poisson distribution or Blaise Pascal’s theories than being familiar with the speeches of José Mourinho or Carlo Ancelotti!!!!
