He still has 6 pro seasons to play.

From memory, I think that you can envisage pre-retirement for a maximum of 3 seasons.
But I'm not sure about the 3 ... Maybe 4 ...

I can confirm that it's 4, having seen it on one player :).

I have a 23-year-old player who has announced his retirement at 37 (i.e. 6 full seasons) and I can convert him.
On the other hand, for those of the same age retiring at 38, I can't.

If your player is taken on by the federation, you can't convert him - he doesn't have to be in the federation.
