Is there any advice regarding renewing player contracts? Do you just give what they ask for, or so do you negotiate longer/lesser wage? If they decline do they leave or do you get another chance?

You don't need to go any higher, but if you go lower, you can try, but no higher than 1000, and if you're refused, it's for 7 days, so don't wait too long.

How late can you leave it? Is it safe to do it the day before to leave the wage change till later? Provided he agrees, of course.

I renew contracts as soon as they become available. That way, I can rest easy and never forget to renew.
You can renew right up until the last minute... with the risk of a refusal if you try to negotiate and of forgetting.
In my humble opinion, this is an unnecessary risk given the low salaries on VF.
