We could even go up to 2 or 3 minutes. The timer wouldn’t be a problem either and could then stay in place.

I’d add that not being able to see the opposing team’s positional movements would be an ideal addition.

Oh no, I don’t agree.

If you just increase the refresh interval but leave the timer in place, we’ll just have the problem less often. But it’ll still be the same problem.

So the only way is to remove the timer but make the changes completely invisible.

I don’t think the timer was put in ‘for fun’ or ‘to annoy people’, but that it’s simply there to prevent and/or deter the 0.1 per cent of utterly relentless players who use three PCs with multiple windows open and auto-clicking to refresh the pages – as some of them manage to display between 3,000 and 6,000 pages in a single match.

I don’t know if there are any other ‘technical’ solutions to prevent this, but unfortunately, as things stand, 99.9 per cent of players are bearing the brunt of the behaviour of the 0.1 per cent of ‘optimisers’.

It’s the same problem as with the disappearance of physical training camps in favour of loaned players, which dealt a severe blow to the practice of training loans, which used to help many clubs (big ones, but also and above all small ones) – all because of the 0.1 per cent who abused the system and threw a spanner in the works by chaining together loan deals.

That’s exactly right. We always end up paying the price for a few people who think they’re being clever. Aymeric doesn’t go into the details afterwards because he’s acting under pressure.

Now, let’s hope he tweaks the current system a bit to smooth things out. No doubt he’ll rethink the current set-up a little, whilst putting a stop to botting or whatever. Let’s hope so.

Saying this doesn’t mean I’m in favour of what’s happening today. In the meantime, we’ll try not to throw ourselves off a bridge.

The problem today is that even players (like me) who were previously in favour of fighting those who were hell-bent on switching sides at the 59-second mark …

… Well, today we (I) are ALSO in favour of a return to the old system. I’ve just played five matches in a row following exactly the same pattern: 3-4-3 versus 3-4-3; we make a move at the start, then both sides get stuck in a Nash equilibrium, nothing moves any more and it’s a 50/50 chance of winning. There’s no game left.

As things stand, it would be better to:

  • remove the 10-minute freeze and go back to the previous system (-5% penalty on the overall score for 10 minutes)
  • reduce the timer to 1 second

I would add that adjusting the timer on its own serves no purpose with the current MDM configuration. Any tactical change results in a penalty, but more importantly, there is absolutely no element of surprise as the statistics are updated to the nearest second. Whether the timer is set to 0, 10, 30 or 300 seconds, the problem remains the same.

Matches between active managers would therefore be much closer in terms of xG (to be confirmed by forthcoming IE/LDC data), even with excellent overall attacking set-ups. This can be explained by a combination of two factors:

  • The xG penalty applied when tactical changes are made (see Galywat’s thread).
  • The instantaneous defensive adaptation to the opposition’s attack, made possible by the real-time updating of statistics.

In real-life football, when a manager changes his formation, the opposing team needs several minutes to readjust tactically. On VF, this adaptation is now immediate (2 seconds). It might make sense for the defence to take some time to read the new formation during the offensive penalty period, rather than responding instantly (or for the information to be partially visible to the opponent as the minutes tick by following the changes)

As things stand, defending and stalling a match to hold onto a lead has become far too easy (although this does not completely prevent the opposition from scoring, drawing level or winning, as certain matches demonstrate).

It’s clear that this timer isn’t calibrated very well (in my opinion, of course)
I don’t think we should remove it; it was put there for a good reason. But 10 seconds is simply ENORMOUS.
I’d suggested reducing it to 1 second, as misha suggested above. Even 2 seconds would still be ‘playable’ – and that’s pushing it.
But 10 seconds, frankly, really takes the wind out of the game’s playability. A massive blow.

On the other hand, regarding this issue of post-change effects during matches, I don’t have enough perspective to have clearly identified or experienced it myself. But I have faith in my fellow players who are shouting themselves hoarse denouncing it. If it’s real, then yes, we’re burying the gameplay, and that aspect of the game which was so enjoyable and appreciated (I think): Tactics.
Going back to the old system (maintaining the MDM’s responsiveness in exchange for a temporary loss of stats) would be brilliant; it would lead to some cracking matches! We’ve had some good times all the same, in certain matches.

I sincerely hope this isn’t the final version, and that it will be improved.

And why not remove the timer, allowing players to see their own statistics updated immediately following any change, with the effects of every change taken into account straight away?
However, the opposing team’s statistics are only visible with a one-minute delay.

So if you’re playing against an absent manager, you have a real advantage.
And if you’re playing against a manager who’s online, the changes made by both sides can catch the other off guard, as the opponent’s changes aren’t visible until a minute later.

I’m sure that with this system, matches would be more lively and, incidentally, there would also be more chances and no doubt a few more goals.

And we wouldn’t have that endless back-and-forth, because by the time we see that the opponent has done this or that, it might no longer be relevant, as we can only see it with a one-minute delay.

Your stats are displayed in real time + 0 seconds, and your opponent’s stats are visible to you in real time + 60 seconds. If they’ve moved several times during those 60 seconds, it doesn’t matter – they’ll be updated one by one as time goes on, at + 60 seconds.

Good evening. Clearly, there’s no longer a timer, and statistics are updated at fixed intervals.

I hope the data is hidden from the opponent outside of these updates. That they can’t, as before, see all the moves we make via the ‘Styles’ tab.

Otherwise, as the same causes produce the same effects, we’ll see a return to the mad rush to reshuffle your team by making several moves in exactly one second, using multiple open tabs on a PC, or even a bot… With a refresh every 30 seconds, perhaps some players will now reach 6,000 moves per match?

For the sake of your game, Aymeric, you need to ensure that PC players don’t have an advantage over app users during matches. This might not please everyone, particularly those who’d rather win than play on a level playing field. But the future of VF doesn’t lie with the PC.

If there’s no advantage to playing on a PC, why do people do it then? Do they open browser tabs in batches just for fun, perhaps? You could ask Ced90 what he thinks; strangely enough, he doesn’t share your view. And of course there’s already third-party software, or there will be, if the problem isn’t sorted out at source. Nothing and no one should have access to what the opponent is doing before it appears in the stats sheet. Aymeric had taken up the issue; he mustn’t give up on it, for the sake of the game.

It takes roughly 5 minutes for the changes to be fully reflected, and this happens gradually, not all at once. So being able to change 5 players + 2 styles + offensive and defensive tactics in 10 seconds won’t give you any advantage.

And yet, all the obstacles caused by abuse – or at least a large proportion of them – came from managers who thought exactly the same thing… Why undermine what the game allows?

To counter the imbalance of one side cramming everything down the middle, you’ve found the solution: not a single player in the centre apart from a DFC, so you can stack DFG,MDGs, MOGs, ASGs and ATGs, with a smaller stack on the right flank to counterbalance and prevent some of the stats from being concentrated in the middle… As far as I’m concerned, that’s not tactics, it’s underhand.

He had exactly the same line of reasoning, and the same defence. “Since the game allows it, I’ve set up a little automated script to pick up players from the shop more quickly, and that’s that.” “It’s not my fault if players earn four times the points in a single individual training session thanks to my programme; that’s just how the game was designed.”

Well, apparently he’s no longer around. So I’m not going to mention his name; I’d be far too afraid he might turn up again… I remember having long conversations with him, back when I was an admin, about what morality was, the spirit of the rules, and why they shouldn’t be flouted. He never understood.

Anyway, we deleted four of his accounts; he caused a league to be shut down twice; he brought another one to the brink of closure; and, just recently, rumour has it that some of his transfers have caused a couple of problems. It just goes to show that, sometimes, you manage to do things in the game that you shouldn’t. It’s something to think about.

So… I’ll just comment and give my opinion straight away – no need to screenshot all my private messages ^^

The standard French version is a browser game, so you can’t really criticise people for playing on a PC

Is playing on a PC an advantage? If you’re looking for ‘+++ optimisation’ => Yes (in 5 per cent of cases)
When do you need this ‘+++ optimisation’? Perhaps three or four times at most during the season, out of 56 matches

Is it essential? No. But then again, anyone who wants to give themselves a better chance of performing well (moving a bit faster, anticipating/countering opponents’ moves, etc.) – that’s their choice

Should this system necessarily be restricted? It’s very complicated because, for example, taking several minutes to achieve the desired stats in an advantageous zone inevitably gives the team with the higher stats the upper hand. Previously, it was possible to give someone a hard time even with 100–150 fewer stats; by restricting this, it’s much less likely

My personal view, which might satisfy everyone to some extent, would be to allow players to move as much as possible BUT not to let them see their opponents’ moves => in the instructions, by refreshing the page like a madman.

This completely eliminates the speed of execution, whilst retaining some of VF’s tactical charm.

To be precise, yesterday we took two steps backwards, as we’d more or less gone back to where we were at the start of the season.

That said, you can always bring up the threat of quitting the game or finding a workaround, but it seems clear that Aymeric is looking for a solution that will allow him to neutralise any advantage we might have by playing with multiple browser tabs or using a bot. There aren’t that many ways to achieve this; the speed at which tactical changes are executed simply must no longer be a key factor. He’s already tried two ways of achieving this. Please point out any flaws you find, in a constructive manner. I actually quite agree with the arguments put forward.

However, the stance of saying: “Move along, there’s nothing to it, let’s go back to how it was”... That won’t work; you’d better start preparing for it.

The more we narrow the skill gap, the more we take a step backwards.
Back then, the bloke who was getting thrashed in the stats would end up 25-0, whilst the best player would win every match.
Then it was reduced because those who wanted everything without improving stood no chance.
It was still possible to win the vast majority of your matches, with a few upsets, especially in cup matches where certain results are unpredictable, but the logic held true most of the time.

And now we’re tightening the reins even further, entering the era of 0.8–0.8xG between two active players so that everyone can have a chance, even if they’re away for 40 minutes.
The ‘VF friendly’ where 120 teams can win the Champions League and 10 clubs compete for the title based on who’s luckiest.

I can already see the next step people will be clamouring for: randomly simulated match results, because it’s too much of a faff and takes too long to sit through 90 minutes.

Well, you might say that Marcus will finally manage to win some matches this way 😅

Did you see me threatening to quit the game? I was the first to praise the effectiveness of the MDM last season and at the start of this one, and even now, given my results, I could say that everything’s fine and that it’s perfect as it is, but that would be a serious lack of objectivity. If there are any bot users, they must be exposed, and systems must be put in place to block them. As for playing with multiple tabs – if Aymeric wants that to stop, I have no problem with that either, on the other hand, I’ll never understand the idea of wanting to ensure nobody moves, or conversely having to move every 10 seconds for fear of conceding if you’re out of position, and that matches are decided by a stroke of luck, I liked the old version of MDM because in 90 per cent of matches I understood the result; I knew when I scored and why I’d scored. Now it’s just been a complete mess for the last two or three weeks.

It’s certainly much clearer and more logical this way.

However, the main drawback remains that you can’t take your opponent by surprise; this makes it much easier to hold onto a lead, as your opponent’s moves become apparent quite quickly.

It seems harder to make a difference, as your opponent will have no trouble anticipating your moves. That said, it’s been constantly evolving over the last few weeks, so perhaps this will be addressed soon.

I feel like the stats update is taking a loooooooooong time!

Although I’m pleased that this pointless timer has been removed – thanks for that – it seems the stats update has been tweaked again.

Thanks

Or do you hope your opponent’s gone off to make a coffee and has forgotten about the match for long enough (at least 10 minutes) for you to change your attack zone without being countered straight away?

Of course, there were the odd blips or illogical results, but that’s always been the case and has been more or less acceptable. But anyway, I’m not going to drag this out into a debate where we’ll never see eye to eye – everyone has their own experience of the game. If some people enjoy coming on two or three times to change tactics during a match, fair enough, but please also respect those who want to be involved for the full 90 minutes. You’re playing the hard-headed one who doesn’t want to understand – never mind. As for me, I’m going to stop trying to explain things to you; there’s no point.

Nobody has said that what’s currently on offer suits them. Or else you’ll have to show me the comment.

That doesn’t change the fact that if we’ve got to this point, there’s a simple reason for it, one that doesn’t stem from any request on the forum: Aymeric has seen a way of playing that doesn’t fit with HIS vision of HIS game. He reckons that ‘top managers’ are doing whatever they like. And he doesn’t want people who are messing about to win. With or without bots. With or without loads of tabs open. If he wants to spell out exactly what’s bothering him, he’ll do so. So he’s trying to put a stop to it. And he will put a stop to it, whether you like it or not. Suggest a better way of achieving this to him, rather than trying to cling on to advantages that he no longer wants you to have – and rightly so.

Hang on, don’t switch the roles.

It’s you (I’m taking the opposite view, seeing as you want to take the opposite view) who’ve been talking to us since this morning about a discrepancy between the French-language mobile and PC versions of the game.

Well, this topic’s a bit of a laugh, but why not.

Then you go on to mention that this afternoon’s update will continue to frustrate managers.

You’re coming in with a heavy hand to:

  • imply that very active managers are cheats

  • suggest that those who use the best methods to win legally are cheats

Then, a little speech full of little lectures, just like every time we disagree with you, with arguments that at times border on sophistry

Solutions have been proposed that would satisfy a large number of managers. (Even you semi-active ones)

But once again, you want to rise three heads above the fray and hand out the good and bad marks

Ah, here we go… The agreements. OK, I understand better now why you’re always taking issue with the same ones.

I don’t see the connection between using a feature legally and cheating – I still don’t.

If the game made it easier to win by fielding three ATCs and dominating the opponent’s three defensive sectors, and managers did just that in response, would you accuse them of cheating too?

Sorry, I should say ‘crafty’

This is a game where you have to win matches; every manager uses the tools at their disposal according to a ‘meta’ to win.

I’m not going to explain the term ‘meta’ to you, as you’ve used the term ‘nerf’ – you must surely know what it means.

And anyway, the person isn’t complaining because they aren’t winning (the proof is that half of them are from the circle and they’re the favourites for the title) but because they’re being prevented from interacting with the opposing manager when both are active.

I’ll say it again because I get the impression you don’t want to understand

You’re getting everything mixed up. The change was made following the anomalies spotted during the visual updates in the second week of September.
After that, Aymeric decided to tweak the MdM in his own way, as he didn’t want to revert it to its original state.
Do you really think the news system and the practice of changing instructions as late as possible before each minute would have remained in place for so long (several months, years) if Aymeric hadn’t been happy with it?
We’re well aware that Aymeric won’t stoop to reverting the game to how it was a month ago, but we need to find solutions so that we can continue to create moments of surprise during matches

But do you actually realise what you’re saying?? This is completely daft…
The MDM was fine before; most of the people complaining about it were those who weren’t really involved, or blokes who didn’t understand how it worked at all. And I’m not even talking about what Ced mentioned in his message. Just because you move your players at the last second doesn’t mean you’ll win a match – make no mistake, there are far more important things to know.
The only complaints over the last couple of weeks were simply down to the gameplay being absolutely dreadful, between the timer and the stat updates. It was completely unnatural and forced managers to react instantly due to a lack of data. The game is initially seen as a game of chess, and that’s what makes it so charming; anticipation must be a key element.

I don’t really understand why you use the term ‘crazy fans’; they’re simply people who are passionate about the game, so it seems perfectly logical to me that they’d be 100 per cent focused on the match and juggling things left and right to try and win. It’s the same in every game: those who are fully committed win more than the others, so I don’t see the problem. If you don’t fancy following the match for 90 minutes or changing tactics every 10 minutes, that’s your choice. But don’t come and criticise us for doing it when we’re having fun.
It’s still just a game, and some people like to spend time on it to unwind and have a good time, whether that’s scouting, working on team chemistry, or whatever else. Giving 100 per cent in your matches is part of that too.

In itself, I understand that last-minute changes are something that need to be addressed. I don’t find it particularly interesting.

Simply hiding changes in style or role might be enough.

But right now, when it comes to two active users, it’s likely to be extremely complicated to distinguish between them. The MDM encourages imbalances. I struggle to see how we’ll be able to do this in future.

That said, I’m not quite sure how to change this to fit with this new version.

It’s still rather cheeky of you to draw up checklists like this.
Nobody’s looking down on anyone, except perhaps those who call their opponents ‘semi-active’, as if to insult them and make them seem less important than themselves.

Nor has anyone said that exploiting the mdm to the very core is cheating; I read the word ‘cunning’, which, until further notice, is not synonymous with ‘cheat’.

After all, it’s you who’s talking about “cancer” when referring to LR, CP and Le Cercle.

I’ll chime in from time to time, not to try and debate with you – since that seems impossible – but to set the record straight and ensure your fallacies, oversimplifications and accusations of ulterior motives don’t go unchallenged.

Definitely not!
This post could also serve as a ‘lesson learnt’

As it happens, I’ve got a fresh one.
I played my first ‘high-intensity’ match against a manager who was online and raring to go.
Honestly… It was a terribly awkward moment. I certainly don’t want to criticise for the sake of it, or without having seen anything (which is why I waited before reacting too).
But very objectively, without wishing to attack anyone, I don’t think either my opponent or I enjoyed that match. What made VF matches so exciting (in my opinion, of course) was the responsiveness of the choice battles. We’d try to catch our opponent off guard, and they’d strike back blow for blow (in high-intensity matches). Only a few arrows were taken into account, when the MDM decided so, and their effect was uncertain for each event selected.

But here… It’s just empty. No chance of catching anyone off guard. My greatest fear is that whoever scores first wins. And that’s clearly how I felt. Admittedly, I won (so I’m not here to moan, just to share my experience), but in practical terms, all I had to do was keep an eye on the stats to understand what my opponent was doing. And adjust (is the centre’s value rising? Well, I’ll fortify the centre until it starts to drop again...). Unfortunately, that’s all the match boiled down to.

So if surprise tactics no longer work to throw an opponent off balance, there’s always the brute-force strategy. If I’ve decided to focus on the flanks and I stake EVERYTHING on that, it might work, yes. But even then, the home team has more than one advantage. Basically, if you’re in the shoes of an away team, you can neither surprise with a tactical choice nor rely on simple raw statistics.

It’s really VERY hard to get your head round. Aymeric, I’d urge you to have a look at what you can reassess, because honestly, without wishing to be critical, I feel that the enjoyment of tactics is being undermined here.
Perhaps this is intentional, but a whole aspect of the game is being stifled here. And I find it quite (actually, very) worrying, personally.

There you go – I certainly don’t want to vilify anyone or express anger, but this is genuinely a very worrying observation. I’ll watch some more matches to see how it plays out, but I’m still quite concerned. The initial results (from friends) point in the same direction.

Of course, I’m not threatening anything – not to leave, sulk, shout, and so on. I’m simply stating an observation. We’ll just have to grin and bear it for now. But… well, perhaps sharing how I feel might be helpful :/

Just over a month separates these two matches; the first match was played whilst the MDM was operating as it has done in recent months, with stats updated every minute. and we can see that my opponent found it much easier to create chances and therefore xG. As for me, I had a bit of a scare when he came back to make it 2–2, but it ended well and that match was a real pleasure.
Today was the rematch, and I think we both found it a bit of a slog; the slightest tactical change takes 10 minutes to take full effect, which really dampens the desire to make changes, I was lucky not to get stuck where I was attacking, but that wasn’t the case for my opponent, who must have tried to adapt – in vain. I’d like to understand what the point of this new feature is, and more generally, the point of so many changes in the space of a month – how can we go from a match engine that produces a lively, that’s fun to watch and full of twists and turns, to a dreary match engine that ultimately puts you off making any moves because if you try, you’ll be immediately countered.
The day before yesterday, Aymeric tried out the 30-second stats refresh; we thought we’d finally seen a light at the end of the tunnel, but it was snuffed out straight away by this new feature.

Hello mate,
I’d been sitting on the sidelines of this debate, but your message has made me get involved – you rascal, François!
On a more serious note, yes, we’ve seen that there are two camps: but both camps have the right to express their views, and there’s no need to try to counter the other by criticising their approach to the game or their determination to have their say. Your view, Baygou’s, Uzzego’s and Sora’s are all valid and shouldn’t be dismissed.

Besides, whilst A45 has changed the MDM, he’s also tried to refine his changes – proof that he, too, isn’t satisfied with the result. And every day new changes appear, proof that they’re still feeling their way.

When you set out to identify the supporters and the critics, on the VFO (which may not be representative but does indicate a trend), there’s still a rather negative NPS. If this score is combined with reduced activity in the game – and therefore in the VF Store – it will certainly mean continuing to make changes to find the right balance between the previous, exploitable world and this current, rather dreary one.

Low-scoring matches, which involve positioning ourselves as well as possible and waiting for a goal at a rate of 0.05 xG per chance when we field a player who adapts to our attacking style.
There’s a slight advantage for managers with a deep squad, who can field 200 players on one flank to stay ahead of the opposition’s defence no matter what.
For managers with a more modest squad, you just have to pray for a 0.5xG goal in the match, or field a substitute who leaves a gaping hole in one area for long stretches.

I used to enjoy playing in my league against teams like Misha’s, Ben’s or Djaiss’s because, even though I was a hundred or so stats behind, I knew I could occasionally catch them off guard with a well-timed attack.
That’s no longer the case today.

So yes, the argument that always comes up regarding these changes is that they were made to prevent people from using bots to make 30 tactical changes a second.
Ced90 has been unbanned, so there’s no longer any cause for suspicion; no other player has been penalised for using bots.
Aymeric also doesn’t want players to make too many tactical changes during their matches. The advantage in a match will therefore come down to whoever has the best team, followed by the luck of the draw.

It’s the Wild West – whichever of the two active managers scores first is practically guaranteed to win the match. I feel for our friend RMP-Val. I think it’s ridiculous how easy it is to defend now once you’ve opened the scoring. Especially with the stats rising in a crescendo – it’s ridiculous for anyone trying to get back into the match. It’s not fun at all.

Merci Aymeric

At the moment, in matches between two active players, it’s impossible to catch your opponent off guard because they’ll immediately defend wherever your attack starts from; this results in matches with just three micro-opportunities each.
As it stands, it’s a 0.5xG – 0.4xG simulator – may the luckiest player win.
