44 dias atrásThe Africa Cup of Nations has kicked off, but this latest edition has got off to a bad start, with several teams suffering walkover defeats for administrative reasons.
Against all expectations, it is the major football associations that have been caught out: Nigeria, Benin and Algeria have already suffered the day’s biggest setbacks.
GROUP A: This matchday marked the very first appearance of INDIA, who were invited to take part under a special invitation. Their introduction to the competition proved particularly difficult against a very experienced ZAMBIA side.
The Zambians took control of the game from the kick-off before striking twice, spurred on by a brace from their star striker, MWANSA.

44 dias atrásGROUP B:
In what was effectively a repeat of last year’s final, played in the group stage, the NEW ZEALANDERS found themselves up against the MOROCCAN side.
The Moroccans controlled the game with great tactical intelligence, leaving the All Whites no chance of getting back into the match. This composed 2–0 victory earned the Moroccans three precious points against a New Zealand side accustomed to competing at the highest level.
The clash between the Blue Sharks of CAPE VERDE and ZIMBABWE produced a completely unpredictable match. Admittedly, the Cape Verdeans dominated possession, but they were woefully ineffective in front of goal.
In contrast, the Zimbabwean players showed clinical precision, capitalising on their only corner to open the scoring with a perfect deflection.
A huge disappointment for Cape Verde, but an ideal opportunity to put things right in the coming fixtures

38 dias atrásApart from the Chipolopolos of ZAMBIA’s walkover defeat to BENIN, all the other matches on this day were played on the pitch.
GROUP A:
Drawing on its wealth of experience in the competition, MAURITANIA confirmed its excellent form by securing a second victory on this third matchday against the GREEN EAGLES, whose wings had been clipped. YOUBA and SOW were named joint MVPs of the match.
In the other match in the group, the game failed to live up to expectations: a disjointed affair, marked by excessive aggression and a total of zero clear-cut chances. INDIA thus ended their second appearance with a goalless draw against the Elephants of IVORY COAST, securing their first-ever point in the Africa Cup of Nations in the process.

Morocco and Angola have maintained a perfect record after these first two matchdays.
The Atlas Lions asserted their dominance with a valuable victory thanks to a brace from Chihi. Facing them, a valiant CAPE VERDE side never managed to find a way to turn the tide.
Meanwhile, the Palancas Negras of ANGOLA secured a nail-biting victory against ZIMBABWE. The Zimbabweans had, however, got off to the perfect start by opening the scoring, before succumbing to Angola’s onslaught in the second half. It was a memorable comeback orchestrated by Bembele, who scored a crucial brace.
Finally, we are witnessing a resurgence from NEW ZEALAND following their opening defeat. In their second consecutive clash against a North African side – ALGERIA – the All Whites struggled before securing three vital points. The New Zealanders’ one-goal lead lasted just 15 minutes before the Fennecs equalised. It was finally in the 62nd minute that the winning goal sealed the final score of the match: 2–1.

31 dias atrásMAURITANIA 1-0 ZAMBIA: The Mauritanian steamroller has struck again, and Zambia bore the brunt of it. Turning the pitch into their own arena, the Mourabitounes secured a clear and well-deserved victory.
BENIN 0-0 IVORY COAST: The fear of defeat stifled the game between Benin and Ivory Coast. It was a frustrating game of chess in which each side waited for the other to slip up, only to ultimately share the points.
NIGERIA 1-0 INDIA: Caught off guard as early as the 2nd minute, India’s Blue Tigers were never able to respond against Nigeria’s Green Eagles, who were in commanding form and in complete control on their home turf.

ANGOLA 2–0 CAPE VERDE: In the shadows, the Angolan executioner has struck again. Cape Verde silently endured its third consecutive defeat, a crushing blow that makes qualification almost impossible.
MOROCCO 0-0 ALGERIA: Breaking with the pattern of past encounters, this Morocco v Algeria match lived up to all expectations. It was a spectacular, nail-biting contest between evenly matched sides, where only the finishing let them down.
ZIMBABWE 1-1 NEW ZEALAND: Under pressure from a dominant Zimbabwe side right from the start, New Zealand’s All Whites thought they had pulled off an upset when they opened the scoring from a corner in the second half. But they hadn’t reckoned with Zimbabwe’s lightning strike, which came three minutes later to snatch a deserved draw.

MAURITANIA v INDIA (0–0): A setback for the Mourabitounes. After three consecutive wins, Mauritania came up against a highly organised Indian side with their backs against the wall. Despite creating numerous chances, the Mauritanians lacked a clinical finish.
IVORY COAST – ZAMBIA (2–0): The Ivorian Elephants confirmed their rise to prominence by dominating the match against Zambia. A lightning-fast brace right at the start of the match settled the contest, securing a crucial second victory for Côte d’Ivoire.
BENIN – NIGERIA (0–1): Dominance does not guarantee victory. Benin tried everything but failed to capitalise on their superiority. In contrast, Nigeria’s Super Eagles showed clinical finishing, converting their only chance to secure a crucial victory in the race for qualification.

MOROCCO v ANGOLA (1–1): This was the headline fixture in the battle for top spot in Group B. Right from the kick-off, Angola showed their strength by creating a string of clear-cut chances against a surprisingly timid Atlas Lions side. Shaken, Morocco managed to respond in the second half: after Angola opened the scoring, the Moroccans immediately equalised to secure a deserved draw.
ZIMBABWE – ALGERIA (Walkover victory for Zimbabwe): Zimbabwe did not let the opportunity to win by walkover slip away. The Warriors capitalised on the utter chaos and lack of direction within an Algerian side in the throes of an administrative and disciplinary crisis.
CAPE VERDE - NEW ZEALAND (0–1): Despite a heroic performance, Cape Verde eventually succumbed to New Zealand’s clinical finishing. The Blue Sharks’ fierce resistance was broken in the final quarter of an hour by a clinical free-kick from Maxwell, the All Whites’ striker.

Whilst a simple draw was enough for MAURITANIA to secure top spot in the group, the IVORIANS had to take all three points. On paper, all the ingredients were in place for a thrilling spectacle. However, spectators were treated to a tight, scrappy encounter, characterised by extreme caution from all twenty-two players and a cruel lack of chances. When the final whistle blew, the goalless draw (0–0) seemed to satisfy both sides in the end.
The Super Eagles of NIGERIA are flying high after securing a third consecutive victory, this time against ZAMBIA. Admittedly, the Chipolopolos’ tremendous effort from the outset paid off when they opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. However, the Nigerians quickly dictated the pace and dominated every aspect of the game. This complete takeover allowed them to turn the game around and secure a 2–1 victory.
As for this final match, which was not played, INDIA were awarded the three points by default against BENIN. This administrative decision follows the Beninese team’s failure to comply with the organisational requirements. This walkover victory therefore secures India a place in the next round, whilst officially confirming Benin’s elimination.

It was the other big clash of the evening, this time in the other group: NEW ZEALAND took on ANGOLA in the race for top spot. The Palancas Negras got off to a flying start, creating two clear-cut chances, which were unfortunately squandered. The All Whites were subsequently reduced to ten men following the sending-off of one of their key players. The second half was a carbon copy of the first, with the only notable moments being a harmless New Zealand free-kick and another red card, this time for an Angolan player. Final score: 0–0.
MOROCCO dominated but failed to score against ZIMBABWE – that was the standout feature of this match: the Atlas Lions did almost everything right against Zimbabwe, except for the most important thing – putting the ball in the back of the net. The opposition’s solid defence thwarted all of Morocco’s attacks. Lacking a clinical edge, the Atlas Lions had to settle for a draw – a result which nevertheless secures them second place in the table.
In the wake of the dissolution of the ALGERIAN football association, the national team continues to rack up defeats by default. Their opponents today, CAPE VERDE, therefore win without playing. This administrative outcome seals the fate of both teams, as the Fennecs and the Blue Sharks are knocked out of the competition prematurely in the first round, having failed to influence the outcome of their group.

A splendid match! Not a single spectator regretted watching this superb fixture. In this open and evenly matched encounter, both teams threw everything they had into the battle.
The Mourabitounes made a big impact in the opening quarter of an hour by scoring two goals.
Whilst set-pieces largely dictated the pace of the game, New Zealand’s tactical changes were only enough to reduce the deficit.
Unfortunately for the All Whites, their lack of clinical finishing in front of goal remained their main obstacle to snatching an equaliser.

The Atlas Lions’ superiority was evident from the kick-off, culminating in a goal scored within the first quarter of an hour.
This early opener allowed the Moroccans to establish their dominance over the match, despite a few tentative attacks from the Super Eagles.
The second half proved less intense and produced fewer goal-scoring opportunities.
Managing their lead intelligently and without faltering, the Moroccan players controlled the rest of the match perfectly right up to the final whistle.”

The Angolans completely outclassed their Indian opponents.
Whilst the Blue Tigers put in a solid performance during the first quarter of an hour, they subsequently collapsed as a team after conceding the opening goal.
With the pressure off, the Palancas Negras ran riot, scoring a second and then a third goal, and could easily have won by a much wider margin given the numerous chances they missed.
What a brilliant victory!

The least exciting match of this round.
Apart from the Ivory Coast’s goal following a swift counter-attack and the sending-off that occurred in the same team, neither the Elephants nor the Zimbabwe Warriors were able to make the difference.
It was a lacklustre affair, characterised by countless technical errors and a complete lack of goal-scoring opportunities.
Despite the general tedium, Côte d’Ivoire secured the result they needed by clinching the very last qualifying spot.

> le match le moins séduisant de ce tour.
> Mis à part l’action du but ivoirien sur une contre-attaque rapide et l’expulsion survenue dans cette même équipe, ni les Éléphants ni les Warriors du Zimbabwe n’ont été capables de faire la différence.
> Ce fut un jeu stérile, marqué par d’innombrables déchets techniques et une absence totale d’occasion...

The match has kicked off – let’s go! The Angolan manager opted for the element of surprise, whilst the Ivorians set up a very deep defensive block to shut down all the spaces.
This compact block threw Angola’s plans into disarray, forcing the manager to make two substitutions as early as the 10th minute. However, it was the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire who spring the surprise, opening the scoring with a cleverly deflected free-kick.
Faced with this situation, the Palancas Negras manager almost used up all his options by making four substitutions in quick succession.
Right from the start of the second half, Angola’s threat became more pronounced, despite a large number of missed chances.
The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute when Angola equalised.
But that wasn’t all! Just as the supporters were bracing themselves for added time, the referee awarded an indisputable penalty. “Maquemba stepped up and scored the winning goal just one minute before the final whistle!

A derby that is rarely contested but always full of suspense. On paper, the Atlas Lions were certainly the favourites against a particularly well-organised Mourabitounes side. Voted man of the match, Chihi tried absolutely everything, but simply lacked a clinical finish in the final moment. This lack of precision proved costly late in the game with the sending-off of a Moroccan player, a stroke of bad luck that came as a relief to the Mauritanian defence. As the tactical changes failed to make any difference, this goalless draw logically meant the two sides had to be separated by the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
