This evening, 17 August 2026, we witnessed the draw (TAS) for the 13th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The standout feature of this edition is the exceptional participation of four federations from outside the African continent.
Before revealing the results, here’s a reminder of the competition format:

- 15 football associations divided into 3 groups of 5.

- Direct qualification for the top 2 teams in each group.

- Play-offs for the two best third-placed teams.

Note regarding the semi-finals: Match 1 vs Match 3 and Match 2 vs Match 4.

GROUP A

MOROCCO 2–0 NEW ZEALAND
This opening day kicked off with a fiercely contested clash between two managers who know each other inside out. Both managers share a common goal: to rebuild their teams by massively rejuvenating the squad and phasing out ageing stalwarts and former veterans. On the pitch, the Atlas Lions’ superiority was evident from the kick-off, against an All Whites side that proved utterly unable to put up a fight.

MAURITANIA 2-0 ZAMBIA
Last year’s runners-up had no trouble seeing off the Chipolopolos. The Mourabitounes were in complete control from start to finish. It is a particularly encouraging victory as the tournament progresses.



GROUP B

CAPE VERDE 0–5 IVORY COAST
In their first match of the season, the Elephants made a big impact, particularly as they were up against an experienced side like the Blue Sharks. The five goals conceded by the latter raise many questions. It is a heavy defeat for Cape Verde, but it comes early enough in the season for them to get back on track.

ANGOLA 1–0 SUDAN
For administrative and organisational reasons, Angola were awarded a walkover victory against Sudan.



GROUP C

Nothing to report in this group. BENIN and GABON were awarded wins by default against INDIA and CYPRUS respectively, for the same administrative reasons. We can only hope that matchday two goes ahead as normal for all the football associations.

MOROCCO 2–1 MAURITANIA:
Following their defeat on penalties in last year’s edition, this North African derby offered the Mourabitounes a chance to prove themselves, and the Atlas Lions a chance for revenge.
The Moroccans gave their opponents no time to catch their breath, scoring two goals within the first quarter of an hour.
Remarkable control of the match then left Mauritania with no chance of a comeback, despite a late goal from the Greens.

ZAMBIA 1-2 NEW ZEALAND:
The All Whites got off to a painful start in this tournament.
The Chipolopolos found the net very early on in the match.
Unfortunately for them, experience ultimately made the difference.
We witnessed a heroic comeback from the New Zealanders, who pushed relentlessly to equalise before snatching victory in the very final minutes of the match.

ANGOLA 4-0 CAPE VERDE:
What is going on within the Cape Verdean football association?
After years of making an excellent impression, the Blue Sharks have been swept up in a veritable storm from which they cannot find a way out.
Facing a high-calibre Angolan side, their ordeal was complete.
This heavy defeat must serve as a wake-up call for the officials, well before the players.
In contrast, the Palancas Negras dominated proceedings, finding the back of the net four times.
For them, the objective is now crystal clear: to retain the title on home soil.

ETHIOPIA 1–0 SUDAN:
Ethiopia’s return after several editions’ absence, combined with Sudan’s first-ever participation, sparked particular enthusiasm amongst the supporters.
Whilst both teams were very wary of one another, the Sudanese showed great defensive resilience, holding out bravely until the 85th minute.
It was at that moment that the match turned: from a long-range free-kick curled perfectly into the box, Ethiopian striker Debebe found himself perfectly positioned to fire the ball into the back of the net.

BENIN 1-1 BAHRAIN:
Whilst no one was expecting a miracle from them, Bahrain are taking part in this tournament to gauge their strengths against other national teams.
Facing a regular on the African continent such as Benin, the Warriors of Dilmoun managed to open the scoring very early in the match.
However, their overly defensive approach cost them in the second half, allowing Benin to snatch an equaliser moments before the final whistle.

INDIA 3–4 CYPRUS:
The highlight of the second day! We were treated to a thrilling spectacle right from the kick-off, with the Indians initially dominating play across the entire pitch.
They managed to open the scoring before doubling their lead within the first thirty minutes.
Cyprus’s response was immediate: a spectacular comeback completely turned the match on its head.
But the twists and turns didn’t stop there. In the 70th minute, India equalised, bringing the score back to 3–3.
The tension remained high until Cyprus were awarded a perfectly-placed free-kick inside the penalty area. Top scorer Mintikkis stepped up to fire a powerful shot into the back of the net in the 88th minute, sending the stands into a frenzy.
A match for the history books, where only victory mattered on this mad night.
