I know that now, your player needs to stay at least 5 season to be converted as a staff.
As far as I remember, the price of the re-training depends on the skill of the future staff, and of course of the choice of the job (for a same player, becoming a coach is more expensive than a marketing manager).

The skill of the future staff is calculated with his overall rating as a player.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that there is a "confirmation button" before the re-training. So you can click once to see the cost of the re-training, and then confirm or go back.
